Luke Huggins, Diana Mulder and Alexandra Starkey were awarded in the Norman Borlaug poster competition - World Food Issues at Iowa State University.
Diana Mulder, an intern in Dr. Leonor Leandro's lab and a senior with a double major in Microbiology and international agriculture, placed first in the undergraduate section of the competition. Luke Huggins, a senior majoring in Microbiology and an intern in Dr. Steven Whitham's lab, was awarded third place. Alexandra Starkey, a graduate student in Dr. Leonor Leandro's lab placed first in the graduate student category.
The poster competition had criteria for the posters to be about world issues such as food, agriculture, climate, nutrition, economics, technology, and more. Dr. Norman Borlaug (1914-2009) was an Iowan whose discoveries sparked the Green Revolution. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970 for his contribution to world peace through his wheat research and production that saved millions of lives worldwide. He founded the World Food Prize in 1986 to recognize the achievements of individuals who have advanced human development by improving the quality, quantity, or availability of food in the world.
