The Department of Plant Pathology, Entomology and Microbiology at Iowa State University hosted a seminar on March 10 as part of the PPEM Spring Seminar Series. Hyeogsun Kwon, Research Scientist in Mosquito Innate Immunity, presented his talk, “Prostaglandin E2 signaling: A central regular of mosquito biology.”
During the seminar, Kwon discussed the role of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), a fatty acid, in regulating mosquito physiology. His research focuses on how this signaling pathway coordinates several key biological processes in mosquitos including immune responses, reproductive development, and metabolic changes following blood feeding.
Kwon explains how PGE2 signaling influences events within a mosquito after it takes a blood meal. The process triggers major physiological changes, such as metabolic adjustments and EEG maturation. His work investigates how PGE2 regulates these processes and how disrupting this pathway can affect mosquito development.
A major focus of the seminar was the interaction between mosquito immune responses and malaria parasites. Kwon described how PGE2 signaling contributes to anti-Plasmodium immune responses in mosquitoes. These immune defenses can limit the development of malaria parasites within the mosquito, thereby reducing the likelihood of disease transmission.
The seminar highlighted how understanding mosquito biology and the molecular level can lead to new approaches for disease control. By targeting signaling pathways such as PGE2, researchers can develop innovative strategies to reduce mosquito populations or interfere with their ability to transmit disease.
