Bronson joined the faculty in 1982 as a fungal geneticist. Her primary interest was the genetics of Cohilobolus heterostrophus and its pathogenicity to maize. She taught courses in Genetics and Epidemiology. She was on faculty improvement leave at Stanford University in 1986 and later in Japan. She rapidly became an authority in her field. She was department chair and later associate vice president for research. She retired in 2014.
