John Ssengo is Ph.D. student in the Interdepartmental Genetics and Genomics program of Iowa State University. John received his B.Sc. in Agriculture (Crop Science major) in 2018 and his M.Sc. in Crop Science (Crop Protection major) from Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda.
John employed molecular biology to produce his M.Sc. thesis research while working with sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) RNA viruses in Uganda. As a doctorate student in Dr. Steve Whitham’s lab, he is interested in exploring research questions pertaining to: 1) how plant viruses and/or fungi interact with their hosts, 2) host-defense mechanisms, and stress tolerance, 3) as well as molecular studies of gene regulation, discovery, and prediction, using an integrative approach encompassing molecular biology, genetics, and genomics.
